Kamyanets-Podilsky

Kamyanets-Podilsky is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. It is located on the Smotrych River in western Ukraine in the north-east from Chernivtsi. Kamyanets-Podilsky is called "Pearl-on-the-stone". This marvelous city is considered a phenomenon of great cultural importance. Kamyanets-Podilsky is well known for the harmonious combination of beautiful landscape and medieval architecture. Thanks to its 170 historical monuments Kamyanets-Podilsky ranks with famous cultural centers of Europe.

Modern Kamianets-Podilsky was first mentioned in 1062 as a town of the Kievan Rus’. Researchers have found in the city remnants of dwellings and fortifications of the 11th-13th centuries. During its history Kamyanets-Podilsky suffered from destructions. However, the old city has preserved its unique and beautiful architectural aspect.

The different peoples and cultures that have lived in the city have each brought their own culture and their own architecture. You can find here Polish, Ukrainian and Armenian markets. Famous tourist attractions include the ancient castle and the numerous architectural pearls in the city’s centre, including the cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, the City Hall building and numerous fortifications.

Since the late 1990s, Kamyanets-Podilsky has grown into one of the biggest tourist centers in western Ukraine. Annual Cossack Games (“Kozatski zabavy”) and festivals, which include the open ballooning championship of Ukraine, car racing and various music, art and drama festivals, attract thousands of tourists and stimulate the local economy.
